The 1996 Cote Rotie Champin Le Seigneur displays a dark ruby color, and an unevolved smoky, roasted nose. It is medium-bodied, with attractive berry fruit, but the finish quickly becomes attenuated and compressed because of the wine's tart acidity. Good ruby-red. Complex nose combines raspberry, mocha, leather and game. Supple and round, with very good intensity of flavor but still rather backward in the middle palate. Floral note perks up the fruit. Strong acidity gives this good grip and sneaky persistence.
