The 2016 Marsannay Village has quite an opulent, you might say, "ravishing" bouquet with intense cassis-infused red fruit, hints of Indian ink developing in the glass. The aromatic are not "shy". The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of freshness and substance. Gentle in grip with tangible backbone, this constitutes one of those Marsannay that is likely to be consumed far too early, when in fact, it will surely reach its apogee with three or four years in bottle. Including many of the frosted lieux-dits that Roty normally bottle separately, the 2016 Marsannay unfurls in the glass with a deep bouquet of cassis, dark chocolate, grilled game and espresso roast. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and nicely concentrated, with excellent depth at the core and a long, penetrating finish. It's a decidedly superior Marsannay from Roty.
(includes fruit from numerous lieux-dits this year, including some of the Rotys' best Marsannay sites): Bright ruby. Aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, black cherry and licorice are enlivened by notes of black pepper, herbs and violet. Juicy and penetrating, showing a slight hard edge buffered by a touch of sweetness. Very tight today, even a bit youthfully disjointed, this Marsannay will need a year or two in bottle to harmonize. Finishes with building tannins and lingering notes of blackberry, blueberry, licorice and bitter chocolate.
