Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2023-2038, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Oct 2017

The 2013 Barolo Margheria is deep, layered and highly expressive, with a super-classic interplay of beguiling Serralunga aromatics, fruit and structure. Menthol, pine, tobacco, wild cherry and rose petal emerge from this deceptively mid-weight, muscular Barolo. The proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove, the 2013 Margheria has so much to offer, but readers will have to be patient. This is an especially brooding Barolo from Massolino. And it is gorgeous.

From Serralunga d'Alba, the 2013 Barolo Margheria is a wine that offers both elegance and power. You get the strength of texture and fiber that is characteristic of this township with the ethereal and nuanced personality that describes this classic vintage. It will be interesting to see how this wine evolves with ten years or more of cellar aging.

Serralunga d’Alba. Neighbouring vineyard to Vigna Rionda. Bottled mid March. Perhaps a shade deeper than the normale Serralunga bottling. Mid ruby with orange tinges. More opulence and depth on the nose and again a hint of liquorice. Immediate tannic impact. Lots of fruit but very closed and tannic and unwilling. Super-tactile and very tannic yet long. (WS)

Tasted from cask, the 2013 Barolo Margheria is a classic Serralunga wine endowed with serious tannins, soaring aromatics and fabulous depth. Rose petal, savory herbs and licorice give the wine much of its layered, sensual appeal. Still raw and in need of further aging, the 2013 is shaping up to be a real beauty.
