Ramonet’s 2005 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru could not keep pace with the previous pair. I find it far too reductive on the nose, obfuscating the terroir expression. The palate dishes out more of the same, coming across very reduced and indicative of an incorrect SO2 addition. Maybe we were just unlucky with this bottle.

Pale color. Compelling nose melds peach, nectarine, iodine, nutmeg and spicy, charry oak. Tactile and vibrant in the mouth, with superb intensity and density to its flavors of citrus fruit, apple and crushed stone. The finishing flavors of dusty stone and citrus peel saturate the palate. This is more backward than the Batard today but its inherent flavor intensity is more obvious.
Quite locked up on the nose. Extravagantly sweet and dense, conveying an impression of powerful ripeness; coats the mouth like a solid. Wonderfully rich and chewy but seamless. Dominant flavors of iodine and clove. Very long, palate-saturating finish. Like the Ruchottes among the premier crus, this is by a wide margin the richest of these grand crus-but then it virtually always is.
