2010 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru

I must confess, I had some misgivings about opening Rousseau’s 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques, as I feared it might not be ready to drink. Those concerns were quickly dispelled as soon as I tasted it. From the very beginning, the 2010 Clos St. Jacques is a total stunner. Deep and beautifully layered, with exquisite aromatics and tons of class, the 2010 is one of the wines of the night. Sure, the 2010 will be even better in a few years, or maybe even decades, but it is flat-out gorgeous today. What a wine!

Rousseau’s 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques takes things into the stratosphere. A model of extreme purity and grace, the Clos St. Jacques leaves the room speechless, and understandably so. Here the fruit is impossibly sweet, perfumed and resonant. If there is one wine in this tasting that encapsulates what makes Burgundy so compelling, this is it. In a word: magnificent!

Good medium red, a bit less deep than the Ruchottes. Youthfully tight aromas and flavors of red berries, rose petal, coffee, mocha and underbrush lifted by a hint of blood orange. More imploded today than the Ruchottes, but already shows outstanding precision and cut. Extremely minerally and vibrant on the firmly tannic, spicy finish, with great subtle lingering perfume.
