2001 was an Indian summer, but the nights were fresh and cool and they got great botrytis. TA 6.5 g/l. Deep gold. Smells of cobbler’s glue. The massive concentration of sweetness has settled into deep fissures of flavour and texture; some light, some dark; some tangy and racy, some languid and silky; some earthy, some bright. It’s a whorl of Indian lime pickle and saffron, fresh white mushrooms and apple jam, golden-syrup silk and honey-buttered toast. Powerfully concentrated, this wine tastes as if it will last forever. Canned peaches and pineapples on the nose, clear but not exciting due to the styled fruit aromas. The 2001 Gewurztraminer Selection de Grains Nobles is very sweet, but elegant with concentration, grip and somewhat austere tannins; the finish is sweet but not really elegant. Breaks off in the finish.
Pale golden-yellow color. Fresh, nuanced nose combines seared pineapple, mango, orange marmalade, peach, apricot, clove and caraway seed. Decidedly richer and more intense than the VT, with lovely purity of fruits and spices. Compellingly pliant, moderately viscous wine, but not at all heavy. Exhilarating noble rot here gives this wine terrific juiciness. Finishes with endless spice character.
