The 2016 Traiser Bastei Riesling GG offers a clear, fresh and coolish, rather classic, elegant and lemon-scented Riesling bouquet compared to the 2017 sample. Rich and round on the palate, this is a crystalline, straight and salty, dense and tightly structured yet very elegant and homogeneous yet thrilling dry Riesling with a seriously long and tensioned finish. The 2016 is very linear and complex and a picture-book Riesling from the Traisen Bastei. This wine was bottled in June 2018. Tasted in July 2019.

White peach, lime, lemon grass, coriander seed and a whiff of wood smoke in the nose anticipate the complexity delivered on a silken but palpably dense and seemingly crushed stone-suffused palate. Pithy, pungently smoky and adamantly mineral, the finish exhibits a combination of vibrancy and formidable sheer grip comparable to that of the corresponding Kupfergrube. Here is another youthful, tightly-coiled example of late-bottled Gut Hermannsberg Riesling that will be intriguing to follow.
The heat of the sun reflected from an impressive sandstone rock formation provides the Grosses Gewächs from the Bastei with a warmth and generosity of expression reminiscent of a glazed apple and almond tart. Nevertheless, acidity is retained miraculously well to provide the steely knife that slices through the cake. Delightfully fresh. (MS)
