Note di degustazione
From the last late harvest so far (that took place in October), the 2016 Riesling GG Kallstadter Saumagen is concentrated on the dense and aromatic but rather classic nose that delivers a hint of caramel and buttercup and lots of flowers, herbs, crushed stones and precision. Lush and finessed on the palate, this is a linear, pure, fresh and concentrated, very elegant and persistent Riesling with lots of tension, lemon juiciness and purity on the intense and powerful yet tight and linear finish. Very promising, Tasted in March 2020.

This reflects multiple pickings of the Rings’ best Saumagen parcels, and was raised around 20% in 600-liter casks. The nose is penetratingly suggestive of corn shoot and fresh ginger, along with intimations of lime and crab apple, which then provide well-buffered tartness and bright animation on a seductively silken palate. Chalk and salt lend personality to a mouthwateringly lingering finish. I wish more of the Rings Rieslings I tasted displayed this degree of diversity and sensual allure. (This was as expressive and impressive when tasted just ahead of its August 2017 bottling as it was when revisited in March 2018.)
A green herbal expression on the nose may be the work of ambient yeasts. On the palate, the Saumagen comes across as quite soft, although the taste of fruit peel manages to add a little piquancy. (MS)
