Really excellent claret nose – loaded with cassis, dark chocolate, cedar, sweet spice and that brooding, classic sense of restraint. Yet it's powerful too – has the Pavie power. You can sense the architecture – firm and grainy, with bright acid and excellent persistence too. The foundations of greatness, with tannins that build up and still need more time – although it's drinkable now if you like all that youthful power. (RH)

Tasted blind. Deep crimson. Sweet and slightly cardboardy on the nose. Pretty heftily extracted. Chewy end but just about enough sweet red fruit flavour in the middle. Drying finish. Late-20th-century style. (JR)
70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Muscular and very thick. Really a bit over the top. More dense and liqueur-like than any of the Californians. Sweet, furry and tannic. When do you drink this, I wonder. With cheese at the end of a meal? There’s a certain sourness on the finish too. (JR)
The 2015 Arômes de Pavie, the second wine of Pavie, emerges principally from two hectares on the plateau that were previously used for the Grand Vin. Black cherry, chocolate, new leather and plum flesh out to give this sumptuous, racy Saint-Émilion its inviting personality. Racy and alluring, the Arômes is a gorgeous wine that may very well hold some surprises down the road. Tasted two times.
