Very different on the nose from the 2009. Much riper and more lifted cherry fruit. Gentle and easy on the palate. Still has the freshness of the 2009 but more muted. Easy to underestimate. Respectful sort of wine. (JH)

Blended of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2008 Ariki displays a medium-deep garnet-purple color and a slightly reduced / tarry nose with a core of dried herbs, ripe plums, blackberries, cedar, baking spices and loam. The medium bodied palate has a firm level of chewy, slightly astringent tannins with lively acidity and just enough fruit, finishing long. Drink it now through 2016. The Robertson family, owners of Te Awa and Dry River, has recently started this Kidnapper Cliffs venture in Hawke’s Bay joining the forces of winemakers Ann MacKenzie and Neil MacCullum. Production is very limited at just around 1500 cases. These early efforts look incredibly promising. Importer: RO Imports, New York, NY.
