Mark Ollivier is one of the leaders in his appellation, working with all pre-clonal vines and never rushing his young wines off their lees. From soils of granite origin, his basic 2005 Muscadet de Sevre et Maine Sur Lie smells of fresh apple and almond with subtle floral overtones. Surprisingly silken in texture but fresh and lively on the palate, it clings impressively with apple, nut oil and faintly bitter fruit skin flavors. Bright straw. Fresh, stony and pure on the nose, with green apple, pear, jasmine and mint aromas accented by dusty talc. Crisp and focused but also juicy, with hvibrant Anjou pear and bitter peach skin flavors supported by gentle acidity. Seductively pliant on the long finish. This is from 40-year-old vines on a single granite-rich site, unusual for the appellation.
