There was so little von Buhl 2006 Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad Riesling Grosses Gewachs that they had to vinify it in tank rather than their preferred cask medium. This displays high-toned aromas of almond, lemon oil, and peach. Lemony and bright even as it is full in the mouth, it finishes with ripe peach accented by lemon, toasted almond, and peach kernel, along with an alkaline, chalky mineral suggestion. Polished and relatively lean – one might add “athletically so” – this should be a good 10-12 year distance runner. The harvest at von Buhl commenced September 24 although as at so many other addresses, the vineyard manager (here, Werner Sebastian) says had he anticipated the unimaginably rapid spread of botrytis, he would have scheduled the pickers to arrive a week earlier. Delicate blossom-laced lemon, even a touch grassy but not unripe. Juicy fresh mid palate and very long and mouthwatering finish. (JH)
