Picked on 12 April. Dark, shaded garnet. Leathery start. The fruit is intact and lively. Lots of evolution and soft tannins. Some real evolved, leathery Syrah character. (JR)

From vines on terraced steep hillside Roy’s Hill above Gimblett Gravels. The 2007 is much lighter apparently. This site more vintage-variable than Gimblett Gravels. This and Trinity Hill’s Homage are the two most expensive wines in NZ. Around £30-40! Really scrummy peppery nose but with no shortage of ripeness. Wonderful opulence without being sweet or flabby. So clean and fresh and flattering but finishes bone dry. A really successful wine. Great energy. Wonderful texture. (JR)
The 2006 La Collina Syrah has more definition on the nose compared to the 2005: very pure blackberry, sous-bois, plum, the Viognier’s aromatics a little more tangible than the previous vintage. The palate is medium-bodied, very ripe tannins, harmonious, blackberry, bilberry and a touch of damson. Very elegant and svelte towards the finish, a compelling sense of symmetry and focus imbued into this Syrah. Outstanding. Drink between 3-10 years. Winemaker Warren Gibson feels that 2007 is the best vintage for Bilancia since 2002 and that 2007 favors his whites due to the retention of aromatics and good natural acidity.
