(from vines in excess of 50 years of age; the Ligniers did not take care of these vines or carry out a green harvest but did a strict triage to eliminate rotten and underripe berries; one of the two barrels was new): Pale, modestly saturated red. Lightly peppery aromas of small wild red fruits, rose petal and orange zest. Juicy, distinctly cool flavors of red berries, biter cherry and spices show good intensity but only moderate depth. Not quite the weight or palate presence of the best examples of this grand cru. The saline, minerally finish shows serious dusty tannins.

The 2014 Griotte Chambertin Grand Cru is the first release from Laurent Lignier. It comes from purchased fruit, although he is continually in the vineyard, and it amounts to just two cases. It has a perfumed bouquet with cranberry, blueberry and just a very faint touch of coca. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit. There is a gentle grip in the mouth and good weight, though it requires a little more nuance and finesse on the finish. It is a decent first effort from Laurent, although there is much better to come I feel.
