The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Aux Charmes Grand Cru has an upfront nose, bold and almost glossy, with blueberry and black cherry fruit, and a touch of glycerine coming through with time in the glass. Curiously, I don't perceive much Pinot Noir in this Pinot Noir. The palate is medium-bodied, supple and silky, with fine acidity. Despite it’s sleekness, there is an underlying zestiness and energy here that means it carries off that style. This is enjoyable, but bereft of typicity, so your enjoyment depends on how much you covet that facet. Give it three or four years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Aux Charmes Grand Cru includes 70% whole bunch with the main trunk of the stem removed (a technique pioneered by Lalou Bize-Leroy.) Clean and precise on the nose, offering black cherries and touches of crushed strawberry and bergamot; the 100% new oak is nicely integrated here. The palate is well balanced with a gentle grip on the entry, and quite savory toward the finish, but this displays good length and is very promising.
