Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2014-2020, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Nov 2014

The 2012 Pinot Noir Monterey is a beautiful Pinot Noir that comes almost all from a cool, fog-covered vineyard located just off of the Monterey Bay. Fermented with 15% whole-clusters and aged 10 months in 25% new French oak, it offers a savory, complex feel in its plum, forest floor, currants and cola spice-driven bouquet. Despite the cool-climate site, this has solid depth and richness on the palate, with excellent texture, good mid-palate density and great finish. In short, it's an outstanding Pinot Noir to drink over the coming 3-5 years.

Big Basin's 2012 Pinot Noir Monterey is absolutely gorgeous. Sweet floral and herbal notes meld into bright red berries in a silky, utterly impeccable Pinot with tons of near-term appeal. This supple, beautifully crafted Pinot impresses for its balance and overall sense of harmony. There is so much to like here. Highly expressive saline and savory notes linger on the close. The mid-October harvest is unusual for Pinot, but it works beautifully here.

Vivid red. Powerful red berry liqueur and floral pastille scents are lifted by a peppery spice element. Shows a darker blackberry quality in the mouth, along with notes of candied rose and cola. Pliant and gently sweet on the finish, which is framed by smooth, well-knit tannins. Quite approachable now, especially with some aeration. This fruit was harvested on October 15th at 22 degrees Brix.
