Dark, shimmering ruby. Assertively perfumed aromas of ripe red and blue fruits, candied flowers, incense and five-spice powder; mocha and licorice flourishes build as the wine opens up. Juicy and seamless in texture, offering palate-staining, mineral-laced blackberry, cherry compote, fruitcake and candied violet flavors and a touch of smokiness. Finishes impressively long and precise, with resonating florality and polished tannins sneaking in slowly to add shape and closing grip.

From an enclave within her Côte du Py holdings, Godard's 2019 Morgon Côte du Py Cuvée Passerelle 577 offers up aromas of sweet berry fruit, plums, rose petals, spices and orange rind that are more demonstrative out of the gates than those of this year's regular bottling. Medium to full-bodied, supple and charming, with terrific concentration, bright acids and melting tannins, it's a brilliant young wine.
Full bottle 1,353 g. In conversion to organic certification. Dark plums, sketched in plum juice and kohl. Silk-screened. Charcoal and blueberries. Juniper and truffle. I compared her 2016 Passerelle to a Frida Kahlo – the 2019 is quieter, more intent, a silk ribbon of a wine threading through the shadows; more introvert but no less powerful in purpose, no less compact. If 2016 was Frida Kahlo, 2019 is Augusta Savage . (TC)
