Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2021-2032, Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, Jul 2021

Just over half of the 2018 Syrah Forgotten Hills Vineyard was made from whole-cluster grapes, offering aromas of sweet red fruit tones, an elegant floral expression and subtle notes of spices, turned earth and worn leather. Medium-bodied, the wine offers a delightful range of flavors with dusty dark raspberry, spiced cherry compote and a dusty floral essence making way for fine-grained tannins and energetic acidity. The wine ends with elegant yet persistent flavors of sour cherry and red and black peppercorn on the lingering, softly dusty finish.

Lots of smoked meats, roasted herbs, charcuterie, and dried flower notes define the 2018 Syrah Forgotten Hills, which is 100% Syrah from a great site in the Walla Walla Valley. Its shines on the palate as well and is medium to full-bodied, with a seamless, multi-dimensional texture and gorgeous tannins. It’s a head turner. Drink bottles over the coming 10-15 years. This is the finest set of releases I’ve tasted from Gramercy since 2015 when the wines seemed to be harvest way too early and possessed more dilute, almost stripped characters. These latest 2018s still show classic varietal characters with plenty of acidity and tannins, yet also bring beautiful fruit and texture.

Bright dark red. Tight, bright scents of raspberry, licorice, iron and crushed stone complicated by musky soil tones; very distinctive on the nose and smells riper than the Collines. Suave, intensely flavored and light on its feet, with good iron and mineral cut to its red berry and pepper flavors. This very penetrating style should be extremely flexible at the dinner table. It's far from sweet (but sweeter than Les Collines) and still needs a couple years to express itself more fully. Finishes with suave tannins and subtle rising length. A fascinating, site-specific Syrah with a strong personality.
