Note di degustazione
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Bates Ranch is a markedly light expression of this classic vineyard site, opening with soft, delicate aromas of loamy soil, red fruits and fresh herbs. The palate is spry and medium-bodied, closing with a very high-toned, vibrant finish dominated by strident acidity. Winemaker Robert Bergstrom observes that this was picked a touch too early, a sentiment with which I'm inclined to agree, although it remains a delicious expression of California Cabernet that will drink well through its first decade.

Grown above 1,000 ft of elevation, with shallow gravelly soils. No herbicide use. Fermented in steel with 16 days of skin contact before pressing into 25% new French oak for 22 months of ageing. Aromas of bright cherry fruit, dried herbs and dried flowers. Beautiful bright flavours of cherry, dried herbs, fresh herbs and dried flowers mix with dried citrus peel and a hint of forest floor. Fantastic acidity and lovely balance, with powdery tannins that hang in a dusty haze around the palate. Notes of redwood bark and cola in the finish. Very pretty. (AY)
