The latest edition of one a long-running, sure-fire value, Kerpen’s 2007 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett smells of clover, honeysuckle, and fresh apple, and comes onto the palate with a delicacy and refreshment that befit its wafting aromas. Subtle creaminess of texture and crushed stone underlying character add to the allure of this superbly-balanced, subtly sweet Riesling worth attending to for at least 15 years. While Martin Kerpen’s extensive array of dry Rieslings from 2007 is not on quite the superlative order of their immediate predecessors, his residually sweet wines are again highly successful. What can Kabinett aspire to be? Pleasant? Nice? Easy-drinking? This one is all that and more, not too sweet and with an interesting spicy touch. (MS)
