Opaque ruby. Perfumed aromas of red berry compote, cherry and woodsmoke, with a dusty mineral quality adding lift and cut. Shows very good depth and precision on the palate, offering sappy raspberry and candied lavender flavors that become spicier with air. Clings with very good tenacity on the finish, which features supple tannins and resonating spiciness.

Dark ruby. Spicy redcurrant, raspberry, licorice and minerals on the perfumed nose. Lively, focused and juicy in the mouth, with flavors of fresh red fruits, spicecake and herbs. Picks up weight and sweetness with air while maintaining vivacity, and finishes with silky tannins and excellent clarity.
A step up, the 2012 Gigondas Sainte Catherine is the same traditional, tank-aged blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault as the 2011. It possesses a pretty, perfumed and elegant style, with notions of lavender, sweet red cherries, flower and underbrush flowing to a medium to full-bodied, rich and nicely textured wine that has no hard edges and solid length on the finish. Strange wet-wool nose and then rather stewed, faded fruit. Astringent finish. Uncomfortable to taste now and it seems it will never have quite enough fruit weight for the green tannins. Fast fade. (JR)
