I couldn't have been more impressed with the 2021 Syrah Mae Estate, from stake-trained, massal selection vines planted in 2018. It was fermented almost entirely whole-cluster and aged for 22 months. A stunning nose brings to mind its influences even more than specific aromas: Jamet, Allemand, Clape and Gonon, from which readers can surely infer my feelings. A supple, enveloping, rich, savory palate leads to an absolutely explosive, intense, layered, complex, stern and sturdy finish. This should be cellared for the next few years at a minimum, but true-blue Syrah lovers, take note: this is one to seek out and be on the lookout for future iterations.

The 2021 Syrah Mae Estate Vineyard emerges from head-trained vines planted in 2018. It’s a unique, compelling wine from young vines that really opens the imagination as to what might be possible in the future as the vines age. Dark cherry, plum, lavender, incense, earthiness, tobacco and dried herbs build in this potent, brooding cool-climate Syrah. This is a fabulous debut.
The 2021 Chardonnay Mae Estate opens with hints of chalk that give way to white peach, red apple, almonds and floral perfume on the nose. The palate has a textural breadth that emphasizes its deep core of savory fruit, and a foil of crisp acidity calls you back to the glass. It has a latent finish and is the most coiled of the Tyler Chardonnays and will benefit from 3-5 years in bottle.
The 2021 Chardonnay Mae Estate Vineyard BR is a selection of the four best barrels in the cellar. It marries notable fruit density and texture with the sense of vibrancy that is such a signature here. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers and a touch of new oak build nicely in the glass. The 100% new oak is masterfully integrated.
