Note di degustazione
80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah. Organic and biodynamic. 60% whole bunch. Aged in 80% Stockinger foudres, 20% terracotta jars. Tasted blind. Mid crimson with soft rim. Not very open at first but becomes dark and peppery with time. Rich, thickly textured tannins that need time. Firm, chewy, deep rather than elegant but fresh enough. A powerful style and suggesting the Rhône. Firm, dry tannin finish is very European. A powerful, classic style. As Giles Cooke MW, one of the panellists in this masterclass, neatly summarised, ‘The tannins could not come from Oz’. (JH)

Deep magenta. A deeply perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and blue fruits, incense and licorice; a floral nuance builds as the wine opens up. Sweet, concentrated raspberry, boysenberry, candied lavender and Moroccan spice flavors become livelier as the wine stretches out. It displays sharp definition and an emphatic, spicy cut on an impressively long, floral-driven finish shaped by supple, well-judged tannins.
The 2019 Gigondas Clos Derrière Vieille is more floral, almost tropical, with rose petal, strawberry, and peppery notes in a medium to full-bodied, balanced package. It’s lively and fresh, with an exotic style that should show more classic Gigondas character with 2-3 years of bottle age. Given its balance and tannins, it should age gracefully.
80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah. Organic and biodynamic. 60% whole bunch. Aged in 80% Stockinger foudres, 20% terracotta jars. Tank sample. Tasted blind. Meaty nose with stewed mulberry and a subtle ashy (whole bunch?) note. Firm and fine tannins and a very subtle note of black pepper underneath the bright fruit. A little drying for now, but will develop nicely over time. (AC)
