Punteggio 94+/100 · Da bere 2025-2037, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Dec 2020

Bright, saturated ruby. Alluring aromas of blackberry, blueberry, crushed rock, minerals and violet. Densely packed and highly concentrated but suave and refined as well. Balanced from the start but the wine's intense blueberry, blackberry and boysenberry flavors will need a good five years to open and start to expand. Today the wine's powerful dusting of tannins and savory minerality overshadow its fruit sweetness. The very long, reverberating, ripely tannic finish shows no rough edges even today. Considering this wine's sheer dimension and power, it's remarkably pliant and sweet already. But its lingering whiplash of chocolate suggests that there's even more sweetness ahead. (from vines planted in 2010)

The 2017 Serra Pedace is also from a Walla Walla site and has a modern bouquet of sweet crème de cassis, violets, spicy oak, and baking spices that just leaps out of the glass. These all carry to a full-bodied red that has wonderful purity of fruit, loads of mouthcoating tannins, a great mid-palate, and loads of minerality on the finish. This beauty is going to benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age to integrate its oak and have 25+ years of overall longevity. Located in Walla Walla and made by Chris Figgins, Leonetti Cellars is one of the benchmark estates in Washington. They produce a bevy of Bordeaux blends, with their Cabernet Sauvignon and Reserve functioning as the flagship wines. They also make a tiny amount of their single vineyard releases, all of which showed brilliantly for this report. Unquestionably, these 2017s are up with the crème de la crème of the vintage. While the 2017 vintage is generally forward and approachable, that’s not the case here and these wines are going to benefit from bottle age.
