The 2012 Pinot Noir Fe Ciega Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills is clean and classy, with notions of cassis, toasted spice, toasted bread and hints of earth giving way to a rich, full-flavored, yet elegant and layered profile on the palate. Completely destemmed and aged 16 months in 40% new French oak, it’s a beautiful Pinot Noir that shows classic Sta. Rita Hills character, and will drink nicely for 7-9 years. I was blown away by these new Pinot Noir releases from Foxen, and they’re up near the top of the vintage. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same with regards to the Rhone blends, and these had superficial, mid-weight profiles geared for near-term drinking. As to the Bordeaux blends, these come from the eastern most AVA in Santa Barbara County and are labeled under the Foxen 7200 label. Tel. (805) 937-4251; www.foxenvineyard.com

The 2012 Pinot Noir Fe Ciega Vineyard is one of the clear standouts among this year's Pinot releases from Foxen. A crystalline, weightless wine, the 2012 impresses for its pure nuance and vibrancy. Layers of dark red and blue fruit, wild flowers and cinnamon wrap around the silky, expressive finish. Sadly, there are just 125 cases to go around. Readers who can find the 2012 should not hesitate, as it is superb.
