The von Beulwitz 2009 Kaseler Nies’chen Riesling Auslese Alte Reben breaks the streak that the corresponding Kabinett and pair of Spatlesen had going, because here the wine's increased residual sugar re-emerges as dominant, with the result that one gleans little sense of detail or nuance, at least for the moment. Herbert Weis indicates that the level of botrytis here was sill minor, adding that the well-ventilated Nies'chen routinely discourages rot. Rich tropical fruit allied with peach and quince preserves inform a creamy palate and finish with generosity but no particular intrigue. Certainly I suspect that this simply delicious Auslese will remain fresh for more than 20 years. The 2009 collection offers yet further evidence that vintner-hotelier-restaurateur Herbert Weis gets insufficient international attention for a stylistically wide range of wines that showcase one of the finest vineyards of the greater Mosel. The dry lots here didn't finish fermenting until March or April – relatively late compared with the norm at other Ruwer estates – and most of the wines were bottled in May (though the two Eisweine only in late August).
