Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2015-2035, Mark Squires, Jun 2015

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, from a warm vintage, is a big boy coming in at 14.5% alcohol. It also has 10% Petit Verdot added in and was aged for 12 months in French oak (40% new, the rest 2d year). The 2010 vintage was clearly an unusual one here–it particularly seemed to affect the alcohol levels in the wines, spiking on the Octagon and Nebbiolo Reserve as well. This Cab, though, seems to handle it better than either of those, also reviewed this issue. Showing fine depth and Barboursville's typically good focus and finish, this lacks the complexity of years like 2006 and 2009, but it doesn't go overboard the other way and seems very fine. It's a big mouthful and it should develop more complexity in time. Overall, this is a bit of a different style, but it doesn't lack for much. It has some questions to answer in the cellar, but it makes me want to lean up on it.
