With a bold, dense nose, the 2016 The Funkadelic Syrah begins with a firm core of dark fruit that turns slightly to red fruit, showing dark cherry and red plum on the full-bodied palate, along with notes of black pepper and minerality. The wine is focused and has a long life ahead of it. The wine has soft raspberry compote and subtle beef jerky flavors on the long, lingering finish. 100 cases produced.

I loved the 2016 Syrah The Funkadelic and it saw one-third stems and 20 months in neutral barrels. Cooler, perfumed notes of blueberries, lavender, ground pepper, and barbecue smoke give way to a medium to full-bodied, rounded, seamless wine that has plenty of sweet fruit and texture. This is classic Rocks Syrah that’s going to benefit from 2-3 years or bottle age and keep for a decade. The style at Sleight of Hand, under the guidance of Trey Busch, Jerry Solomon, and Keith Johnson, has changed dramatically over the past 4-5 years and the wines show more finesse, elegance, and purity today, without sacrificing on fruit or texture. These are brilliant wines, and I certainly include this estate in the top handful of estates in Washington today. Unfortunately, the top cuvees are made in tiny quantities.
