Weis’s 2007 Kaseler Nies’chen Riesling Auslese Alte Reben features pear drops, marzipan, cinnamon, and vanilla in a rather confectionary yet soothing and – thanks to a citric brightness that has yet to be entirely integrated into its finish – ultimately still a refreshing performance. Here is another case of richness going hand in hand with lift and even delicacy. You can expect several decades of fascination and delight from bottles of this, although I would not be in any hurry to crack the first. Once again, I did not have chance to taste quite the entirety of Herbert Weis’s collection, a situation (due partly to time constraints, but also to his own modesty) that I took pains to remedy with his 2008s.
