Full bottle 1,356 g. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Syrah. 18 months in new French oak. Is this really a 20-year-old wine? You’d sift through a forest floor of mushrooms and a hundred years of leaves, new gold laid over old copper over humus black, smelting down into earthland ore to find this wine. A place where gold is the taste of earth. And spiced plums, drying on hearth stones; thyme, hung up in thick bunches over the inglenook. This tastes like fireside stories. It has the gentleness of age; copper of autumn sunset; rusty nail, old blood; spices gone hard in the jar; rose petals brown and brittle yet still faintly scented in the pot-pourri bowl. Tannins, no longer rigid, not yet papery, lean gently into the shape of the wine. It is always an honour to taste old wines like this. (TC)

(a 60/25/15 blend of cabernet, merlot and syrah) Good full ruby. Rather claret-like aromas of cassis, plum, pepper, graphite, violet and sandalwood. Sweet on entry, then rather tight, even a bit pinched, in the middle, with intense, well-delineated dark berry and herbal flavors. Finishes with firm, mounting tannins. Not yet complex, but showed more nuance as it opened in the glass. This needs extended aeration-or, better yet, five or six years of additional bottle aging.
A spectacular white effort from a country known primarily for its reds, the 2001 Mesa de Calonge reveals an exotic, light green/gold color in addition to high acidity, great length, tremendous fruit, and plenty of texture as well as intensity. A blend of 50% Viognier, 45% Roussanne, and 5% Marsanne, this shockingly superb dry white admirably demonstrates what can be achieved in Spain. It should drink well for 1-2 years.
