Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2017-2022, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Sep 2016

(this and the following 2014s were bottled last November): Palish bright yellow. Musky aromas of ripe apple, lemon, minerals and smoke. At once thick and energetic, with brisk lemony acidity giving a penetrating quality to the middle palate. With its superb inner-mouth energy and rising finish, this is a superb Saint-Véran for mid-term aging.

Pale straw. Rich apple sauce on the nose (and I promise I wrote that before I noticed the name of the cuvée). Lots of extract and charm. Clean and svelte. Great balance and lots of delivery. (JR)

The 2014 Saint Véran les Pommards has more complexity and intensity than the En Creche, roaring out of the glass with lovely flint and smoky notes before settling down to something more refined. The palate is very well balanced, quite phenolic in the mouth but very well balanced. I love the weight here and yet it is never overpowering, hints of almond and peach skin embroidered on the finish. This is a classy number.

(on its finings in tank; from northwest-facing 50-year-old vines at the bottom of La Roche de Solutré; aged entirely in fûts , 20% new, for 12 months): Deeply pitched aromas of ripe peach, apricot, orange and smoky oak; clean but showing a slightly exotic honeyed ripeness. Fat, rich and sweet, offering tangy lift and good bracing acidity to its stone fruit flavors. Quite minerally and firm on the aftertaste. Serious juice: this will be a Saint-Véran to age.
