Moving to the reds, and the only 2013 I was able to taste, the 2013 Languedoc is 60% Syrah, 25% Grenache and 15% Mourvèdre that was completely destemmed, and aged 12months in Burgundy barrels and demi-muids (the Grenache was raised in stainless steel). It’s a juicy, fresh, medium to full-bodied and elegant red that has classy notes of red and black fruits, licorice, crushed flowers and spice all emerging from the glass. Showing the purity and focused character of this cooler, late year, it will drink nicely through 2025.

From calcareous vineyards near Pézenas – mainly Roussanne with Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Picpoul. Fermented and aged in Vosges oak barrels. Naughty heavy bottle but an interesting and ambitious Languedoc white that is just a little sweeter than perfection (I find myself lusting after the acidity of the finest Roussillon whites) but has certainly been made with great care and ambition. It would be too heavy as an aperitif but I can imagine its standing up to some pretty assertive foods. There's a real limestone tingle on the finish – and a bit of heat. It's still relatively astringent and I think may always be just a little honeyed-tasting. (JR)
