Dark, brooding and concentrated in the glass. As with the Grand Vin, the tannins are powerful but incredibly ripe and finely tuned and in absolute perfect harmony with the vibrant acidity and gloriously rich fruit. A slightly more forward and open expression of this Chateau and a perfect complement to its big brother. An incredible second wine. Highly recommended..

The 2016 La Dame de Montrose offers redcurrant and cranberry fruit, not complex per se, but well defined with neatly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite strict and linear, though there is ample depth with gentle but insistent grip towards the finish. Give this another year or two in bottle. A proper Deuxième Vin. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.
The finest vintage of Montrose's second wine in this vertical was the 2016 La Dame de Montrose, a medium to full-bodied, deep and layered wine that's velvety and pure, with a beautifully balanced profile and an inviting bouquet of dark berries, licorice, cigar wrapper, loamy soil and violets. Given the longevity that other top vintages have demonstrated, there's no rush to start pulling corks.
Great depths of fruit, this is dominant Merlot in the blend but the character of the vintage is all about blackberry, cassis, graphite, tannins and firm, well defined tannins, and they dominate the palate - confident but already welcoming, this is a great 2nd wine, one of the standout successes of an exceptional year. The Petit Verdot went entirely into the Dame de Montrose in this vintage.
