Adam deems this “a classic Auslese, from exceedingly ripe [ hochreife ] grapes with zero botrytis.” White peach and Persian melon project a slightly syrupy personality, but brightly juicy grapefruit and a major, mouthwatering influx of mineral salts keep that syrupy aspect – not to mention the wine’s literal sweetness – nicely at bay. The sense of sheer succulence of fruit here is ravishing, and beautifully complemented by a glycerol-slicked, subtly creamy feel. The superbly sustained finish is at once soothing and animatingly stimulating.

Thereâs unrelenting mineral drive to this wildly impressive riesling, which brims with smoke, cloves, lemons, limes and crushed chalk. Unforgiving acidity here, yet this remains rich and multifariously flavorful, offering a kaleidoscope of sweetness, energy, savoriness and minerality, all molded into one majestic sculpture. Drink now or hold.
The 2018 Dhroner Hofberg Riesling Auslese was picked at 97° and 98° Oechsle between middle and late October and then fermented in stainless steel. The wine is coolish, flinty, still reductive but precise and sexy, with a concentrated, dense and pretty sweetish palate with good grip and salty piquancy. A promising 2018 that needs 10 years to gain finesse and more talents. Tasted in April 2019.
