Punteggio 91/100 · Josh Raynolds, Dec 2014

(70% new French oak and 14.3% alcohol): Bright purple. Ripe black and blue fruit aromas are lifted and sharpened by peppery spices and smoky minerals.  Powerful yet lively on the palate, offering vibrant boysenberry and bitter cherry flavors that put on weight and turn spicier with air.  Shows excellent clarity and thrust on the fruit-driven, gently tannic finish, with an emphasis on juicy blue fruit and spicecake elements.

In the same ball park quality-wise (as the 2011 Mule), the 2011 Misfit is 100% Syrah that's from the Bien Nacido and John Sebastiano vineyards. Spending 28 months in 60% new French oak prior to bottling, it has juicy berry, olive, peppered steak and hints of gaminess to go with a medium to full-bodied, rich and nicely textured style on the palate. There's bright acidity here, but it's nicely integrated and adds freshness to the finish. It's already up-front and delicious, and should be enjoyed over the coming 4-5 years. My tasting with Matthias Pippig was a big one, and the lineup is loaded with outstanding wines. Tel. (805) 845-0920; www.sanguiswine.com
