Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2013-2020, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Aug 2012

I was totally struck by the 2009 Grenache L'Ange Rouge, a wine that captivates all the sense. I hope readers can appreciate just how rare it is to encounter a Central Coast Grenache with this much sheer finesse. The purity of the fruit is simply striking. The 2009 clocks in at 15.8% alcohol, none of which is evident, proving that balance is what counts. There is no shortage of that here. The 2009 is 90% Grenache, 6% Syrah and 4% Mourvèdre, fermented with 40% whole clusters and aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, 20% new.

I found a lot to like in these new releases from McPrice Myers. The wines are made from a variety of appellations in the Central Coast. Tel. (805) 400-5988

Always a full bore Grenache, the 2009 McPrice Myers Grenache L'Ange Rouge is locked and loaded with sumptuous kirsch and framboise fruit characteristics that are balanced by loads of bramble, spice, and licorice. This shows the firm underlying core that's common in all of McPrice's '09s, yet has a wealth of fruit and texture. It can be enjoyed now, or cellared for 3-4 years.

The 2009 L'Ange Rouge (Grenache) bursts onto the palate with an exciting mélange of sweet red cherries, tobacco, licorice and rose petals. It reveals gorgeous textural finesse, silky tannins and terrific balance, even if the alcohol peeks through just a touch on the finish.
