I also tasted the 2019 Extra Brut Rosé from magnum. Composed entirely of Pinot Noir, the 2019 Extra Brut Rosé Magnum comes from the Topotero Vineyard in Avila Beach, planted in 2000 just 1.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Made entirely with free-run juice, it received three grams per liter dosage rather than the four that the one from the 750-milliliter bottle received, and it spent 3.5 years en tirage before it was disgorged by hand in October of 2023. Winemaker and owner Nicole Bertotti Pope says 2019 began with heavy winter rains that were followed by moderate temperatures during the spring and summer. A long, cool growing season ended with one of Haliotide's latest sparkling harvests on September 3. It has a medium salmon-pink color and ringing scents of peach cobbler, toast and gunflint with spicy undertones, gaining intensity and expression as it spends time in the glass. The medium-bodied palate is creamy with complex flavors and an effortless balance of linear acidity and textural breadth. It's a stunning example of California sparkling.

Even better, the 2019 Rosé Extra Brut Topotero Vineyard has similar strawberry and bright cherry fruit to go with complex spice, brioche, and dried flower nuances. I love its texture, it’s medium-bodied, flawlessly balanced, and has a great finish. Coming from a cool site near Avila Beach, it saw 30 months of tirage and was bottled with 4 grams of dosage. You can safely put this up with the finest sparkling wines coming out of California. Bravo.

Pinot Noir. Fruit comes from Topotero Vineyard. Fermented and aged in a combination of stainless steel and neutral French oak for nine months. Malolactic conversion blocked. Bottled by hand, unfiltered. Spends 30 months en tirage. Dosage 4 g/l. Hand-riddled, disgorged October 2022. 1,176 bottles produced. Sold via mailing list only. Light coppery pink with medium-fine bubbles. Smells of orange peel and rose hips. A somewhat soft mousse delivers flavours of orange peel, dried raspberries, rose hips and a touch of dried flower petals. Very good acidity. This wine feels like it had slightly more oxidative winemaking than the previous vintage. (AY)
