Opaque purple. Explosive bouquet displays blackberry, mulberry, creme de cassis, cherry-vanilla and Asian spices. A zesty cracked pepper quality adds urgency to the deep, sweet dark berry flavors and a kick to the back end. Mixes depth and energy with a deft hand, finishing with exotic notes of floral pastille and spicecake. The spicy quality lingers endlessly, giving this wine an improbably vivacious personality. There are just 200 bottles of this for the United States.

The 2005 La Vina de Andres Romeo is a bit more brooding and backward. Opaque purple/black, it has an alluring nose of toasty oak, pencil lead, scorched earth, espresso, truffle, and blackberry. Tightly wound but beautifully balanced, this is an opulent effort that requires patience. Give it 10-12 years of further aging and drink it from 2020 through 2040. Words can barely do justice to how singular these wines are. They must be tasted to be believed. Importer: Jorge Ordonez, Fine Estates From Spain; tel. (781) 461-5767

Minty, even eucaluptus notes. Very ripe, dried fruit. Dry and fresh, compact powdery tannins. Savoury, muscular and powerful.  (JH)

A single-vineyard wine inspired by Benjamin Romeo’s father Andrés, whose passion for nature and the vine in particular has been and still is a source of inspiration for Benjamin. Andres Romeo is nearly 80 but still closely involved with the vineyards, eg he goes through the oldest sites with Benjamin to tell the pickers which grapes to select for Contador. 100% Tempranillo. Really black in colour, with a dark purple rim. On the nose, very different from both Contador wines – much more meaty and earthy, but still with a herbal topknot. Tannins are fine and compact, cool and very fresh. Compact but not stocky. Firm and dry with well-toned muscles. Some dried fruit character yet fresh, tense and with great clarity.
