2016 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny

Healthy dark red. Precise aromas of blackberry, black raspberry, licorice, flowers and spices. Juicy, spicy wine combining subtle sweetness and soil-driven salinity, with complicating notes of licorice and herbs. Fairly tight but not short on flesh. This serious, well-chiseled village wine will need at least a couple years in bottle to expand.

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny was reduced by 40% of production this harvest, withplots closer to Morey-Saint-Denis less affected by frost than others. Now this is much more promising than the Bourgogne Rouge, replete with lively red cherry and wild strawberry fruit, not powerful but delicate. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a fine bead of acidity, what you might describe as a “transparent” Chambolle-Musigny with fine tension and a sense of stoniness on the finish. Classic from start to finish, drink this over the next 7 to 10 years.
