A deep, pungent wine, the 2013 Morey St. Denis 1er Cru shows the wilder side of the village. Game, smoke, licorice, tobacco and incense are pushed forward in a textured, energetic Burgundy that appears to have a bright future. The Morey 1er Cru is a blend of fruit from Ruchots, Clos Sorbé, Millandes and Charrières.
Good medium red. Expressive, terroir -driven nose melds raspberry, strawberry, cherry, brown spices, dried rose and earth. Rich and supple on entry, but with a firming edge of peppery herbs shutting down the middle palate in the early going. Finishes with dusty, firm tannins and very good energy and lift. This fruit was harvested at 11.5% alcohol and although the wine is low in fat it comes across as a bit riper than the village Morey.
