The deep garnet colored 2013 Ontogeny Red Wine is composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Petit Verdot and 10% Cabernet Franc. It explodes from the glass with bombastic Chinese five spice and hoisin scents over a core of preserved plums, boysenberries and blackcurrant pastilles plus hints of woodsmoke, iron ore and tobacco leaf. The rich, densely packed, full-bodied palate delivers bags of black fruit preserves with a well-played backbone of freshness and soft texture, finishing long and layered. 590 cases were made.

The 2013 Ontogeny, Bevan's entry-level red, is fabulous, especially for the money. Super-ripe black cherries, mocha, plums, new leather, spices and espresso flesh out. Succulent, open and incredibly forward, the 2013 delivers the goods, big time. This is Russell Bevan's least expensive wine, and it is delicious.
The 2013 Ontogeny Proprietary Red is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Petit Verdot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, coming from some of Russell Bevan’s favorite vineyard sources – Sugarloaf Mountain, Two Dogs, Tin Box and Tench. Quite flavorful, it is exhibiting slightly more new oak than some of the other cuvées, but is still sexy and opulent, with voluptuous texture, low acidity, and oodles of juicy, succulent black and red fruits, licorice, underbrush and a touch of vanillin.
