Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2020-2045, David Schildknecht, Vinous, Nov 2020

A parcel of ungrafted vines planted in 1953 and featuring loose, botrytis-resistant clusters is almost always the source of Adam’s Hofberg Spätlese, and their further talents are revealed by fact that in the context of 2018 this wine was genuinely late-picked – on October 18 – yet the grapes registered only 91 degrees Oechsle. Quince and Persian melon project an effusively ripe aromatic and luscious palate impression. The feel is strikingly creamy, but pineapple and nutmeg serve for both tingling juiciness and invigoration. A hint of raw almond and a mouthwatering influx of mineral salts add further complexity as well as a compulsion to take the next sip so strong that I had to restrain myself to appreciate the finish’s remarkable full length.

Subtle notes of dried apples and pears here, as well as dried cloves and spices. A detailed, precise palate follows that’s only medium in body, but full of enticing tension and cutting citrus character that ebbs and flows like a pristine morning lake, the mists and scents of flavors blowing around the surface. Drink now.

The 2018 Dhroner Hofberg Riesling Spätlese is from the warmer part of the single vineyard and was picked around October 12-13 at 94° Oechsle. It is very clear and intensely aromatic on the elegant nose, followed by a crunchy, sweet and generous palate. Fermented in stainless steel, this Spätlese is pretty racy and piquant, with good grip and tension but also a pretty sweet finish. Tasted one day after filtration in April 2019.
