Good medium red. Reticent nose offers coffee, smoke and game, with primary fruit currently in the background. Then surprisingly sappy and precise in the mouth, with noteworthy delicacy to the intense flavors of red berries, smoke and spices. Most impressive today on the very long, lightly saline finish, which displays noble tannins and a subtle note of game.

The 2010 Ruchottes-Chambertin is pure silk on the palate. Freshly cut roses, raspberries, mint and crushed rocks are some of the nuances that take shape in the glass. In 2010, the Ruchottes is rich, yet weightless, in the way only Burgundy can be. All the elements are beautifully woven together in this totally gracious, striking wine. This parcel is over 60 years old. The Mugneret sisters aren't in favor of using the Vieilles Vignes designation for the wines, as that term has no formal definition. The old vines go into Ruchottes, the young vines into the 1er Cru.
Bright, dark red. Deep, sappy, exuberant aromas of raspberry, pomegranate, orange zest, spices and flowers, all lifted by a whiff of iodine. Dense, dry and vibrant, conveying a strong impression of chewy extract. Not yet especially complex in the mouth but precise and perfume, with a very long, slowly mounting aftertaste. I may be underrating this today.

The old vines go into Ruchottes, the young vines into the 1er Cru. Anticipated maturity: 2025-2045. Sisters Marie-Andree and Marie-Christine Mugneret had a tough harvest in 2010. For starters, the December frost wiped out a hectare of Vosnes villages just behind the winery. The vineyard has been replanted and will be used for the Bourgogne until it reaches the age necessary for it to once again be part of the villages bottling. Overall production is 22,000 bottles versus the more normal 34,000. As for the wines, well, they are magnificent. The same holds true for the 2009s, which I will report on in the next issue.
