Upfront, smoky oak on the nose. Firm but super-fine tannins. Still only primary in terms of the flavour profile. Fruit, fruit, fruit. And sappy oak too. (RH)

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet with mulberry, blackcurrant leaf, wild strawberry and sous-bois aromas, fine mineralité "bubbling up" with aeration. The focus is commendable here and the oak well integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, velvety smooth in texture with some quality new oak lending an irresistible sheen. Yet the oak is in sync with the fruit and it fans out on the very polished finish. Pretty gorgeous overall, though be warned, it will be a temptress in its youth. (80% new oak): Deep red with ruby tones. Aromas of black cherry and licorice complicated by smoky minerality. The plushest and sweetest of this set of 2016s, but also with lovely energy and mineral lift to its flavors of black cherry and violet. Finishes dusty and very long, with an obvious element of wood tannins but no dryness. Boasts a terrific combination of density and precision. And as with the estate's Grands-Echézeaux, this wine has not been knocked off balance by the tiny crop level.
