A wine that continued to blossom with time in the glass, the 2005 Cote Rotie la Mordoree offers classic notes of raspberries, cured meats, dried violets and spice in a medium to full-bodied, elegant, seamless package. Full-bodied, concentrated and layered, with more olive and gamey flavors on the palate, drink this beautiful effort anytime over the coming two decades.

Bright red. Fresh red berry and cherry aromas are complicated by smoky minerals and dried violet. Tangy and youthfully wound-up, offering tart red fruit flavors and gentle mineral lift on the close. The soft, harmonious tannins suggest that this will be enjoyable on the young side but the acidity argues otherwise.

Dark red. Intensely aromatic nose offers potent raspberry, wild strawberry and graphite scents, deepened by suggestions of cola and sassafras. Powerful, rich and sweet, but well-focused and pure, with lush red and dark fruit flavors accompanied by licorice and violet pastille notes. Finishes on a tangy note, with outstanding length.

Sixty-year-old vines grown on the Côte Blonde, fermented in open oak fermenters and matured in one-third new oak. Not especially dark crimson. Lots of black pepper and ripe richness too. Also an almost burgundian element of compost. Rich and juicy start with tight finish and lots of very fine tannins. I’m sure this wine will eventually be beautifully silky. A very light touch as far as winemaking goes. Nothing like Guigal – more fragrant and airborne – but more solid and reticent than, say, Rostaing. Pretty impressive. (JR)
