The vines on this 0.34-hectare plot were planted in 1966. It is the highest and most northerly of Gevrey’s Premiers Crus. East-facing, steep and windy, the wine clearly speaks of this cooler spot – a real asset in the warm conditions of 2020. It stands out in the line-up for its bright, crunchy profile, with a more mineral, saline edge. Deliciously long and lush with vibrant acid, there’s also a chalkier tannin grip here.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Goulots unfurls in the glass with aromas of cherries, sweet red berries, licorice and warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, supple and vibrant, with a sweet core of fruit, melting tannins and a mineral finish, it's one 2020 that appears to be more demonstrative than its 2019 counterpart.
The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Goulots 1er Cru showed just a very tiny reduction on the nose when I visited, though it unfurls to reveal a mixture of red and black fruit, touches of pencil box and pine cones. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite poised and lightly spiced as it fans out on the finish, albeit in controlled finish. Impressive persistence here - this is one for the long-haul.

Domaine Fourrier is located in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. The estate has been run by Jean-Marie Fourrier since 1994, and has rapidly become one of the village’s most fashionable names, known for producing pure and transparent Pinot Noir.
