Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru les Malconsorts from Domaine de Montille was a vexing showing. Here it displayed a reduced nose, very savoury, almost animally with game and dried blood notes infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly ferrous red berry fruit, a little savoury in the mouth and some dryness marking the finish. Not unattractive, though you would never describe it as being the "the best in show." Furthermore, it seems to lose some of its clarity in the glass. I will reserve judgement based on this showing.

(13% alcohol; 60% new oak): Bright medium red. Very ripe aromas of black raspberry, smoky minerality and dried flowers. Plush, highly concentrated, outsized wine, combining grand cru volume with a surprisingly airy texture. Finishes with wonderfully suave tannins that saturate the entire palate and give shape to the wine's fruit. Really outstanding soil-driven depth here.
(100% vendange entier; 60% new oak): Good deep red. Deep aromas of ripe raspberry, smoke and meat. Ripe, sweet and mouthfilling; mellow and voluminous in the way of a grand cru. Very deep wine with a broad, saline, soil-driven finish that mounts slowly and builds impressively, with the tannins dusting the front teeth and everything else in the immediate neighborhood.
The 2012 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts is a bit reduced today, especially in its bouquet, which makes it hard to get a read on. There is plenty of vintage 2012 intensity in the glass, but the Malconsorts is going to need time to fully come together.
