From the sandy soils of the Contra Costa County (and vines planted in the late 1890s no less), the 2013 Evangelho Vineyard Heritage is a blend of 60% Zinfandel, 18% Carignan and the balance Mourvèdre, Palomino, and Mission. Its ruby purple color is followed by lots of brambly, Zinfandel fruit, notes of cigar and tobacco, peppery spice, and cedar. With medium-bodied richness, lots of character, and a clean, classy finish, drink this interesting, balanced red over the coming 6-7 years.

The 2013 Evangelho Heritage Wine is a real stunner. Silky, suave and nuanced on the palate, the 2013 impresses for its balance and total sense of class. Sweet red berries, flowers, spices and mint are all given an extra dimension of aromatic lift from the significant presence of sand found in this Contra Costa site. The acidity is especially bright in 2013, adding to the wine's energy. Carignane, Zinfandel and Mourvedre form the core of the blend.
From the sandy soils of a Contra Costa vineyard planted in the 1890s, the 2013 Proprietary Red Evangelho Heritage is composed of 60% Zinfandel, 18% Carignane and the rest Mourvèdre, Palomino and Mission. It exhibits dusty, loamy soil undertones intermixed with underbrush, ripe berry fruit, pepper, earth and spicy notes. This interesting, terroir-driven, medium to full-bodied wine shows good fruit as well as a touch of rusticity. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.
