Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2018-2028, Neal Martin, Feb 2019

The 2000 Clos de Tart Grand Cru was picked from September 18 with surprisingly high alcohol: 14.0° to 14.8°. It has a comparatively light bouquet, quite precise but missing the substance expected of a vineyard of this stature. There is a pleasant airy nature here. The palate is light-hearted with vivacious red fruit, not as fleshy as it showed during its youth and relatively straightforward compared to the 2002. Yet I enjoy the pepperiness on the finish, and I like this millennial offering almost as much as the 1999. Tasted at a private Clos de Tart dinner in London.

Tasted at the pre-dinner vertical to mark Sylvain Pitiot's retirement from the domaine, the 2000 Clos de Tart Grand Cru has a slightly shallow bouquet compared to other vintages of similar age. What it lacks in intensity it compensates in terms of brightness and precision. This is a joyous nose that doesn't really care too much about any deficiencies. The palate is medium-bodied and is actually superior to the nose with pleasant, fleshy red fruit; it is spicy and peppery in the mouth, linear and long. This is far more satisfying than I presupposed - the kind of grand cru you yearn to drink and not intellectualize over. Bon vin (pour la millésime).

Mid crimson. Surprisingly deep crimson – real life to the look of it. Gamey and exotic and rich on the nose – a really lovely surprise. Very sweet and flattering. Loose – the tannins have all melted – but a really superb drink now. Very flattering and with more guts than many of its peers from this vintage. For perfection perhaps one would want more acid and tannin, but not if you wanted to drink it tonight! (JR)
