Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2018-2028, Neal Martin, May 2018

The 2008 Clos du Marquis has an expressive bouquet with blackberry, briary and pencil shaving aromas that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with just a light seam of greenness, although it merely adds freshness and asserts its classicism. I find this fresh and balanced, sporting just the right amount of dryness on the cassis-driven finish that balanced with the fruit, lending it a “breezy” and unassuming character that suits it down to the ground. Enjoy this over the next decade. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 10-Year On tasting.

Tasted blind. Very evolved nose. Rather simple cassis essence on the nose. Youthful. Lots of furry fruit and tannin. The palate needs time! A conundrum. (JR)

Ripe cassis aroma with a candied quality to the fruit but then quite light body with a short finish. Drying texture leaving an austere impression. (RH)

Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2018-2030, Neal Martin, Feb 2018

The 2008 Clos du Marquis has a fragrant and floral bouquet with dried rose petal scents infusing the raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, cedar and sandalwood following later. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, classic in style, a little austere and perhaps needing more depth on the finish. But it feels long and tender and constitutes the kind of SaintJulien that you know will be enhanced when served with appropriate cuisine. (Tasted at BI Wine & Spirit’s annual 10-Year On tasting.)
